This instrument utilises colour sonification as its main aspect of playing sound. It sonifies colour by scanning colour data from various real-life surfaces (such as table, wall, coloured paper, etc). Later on the colour data is mapped to different chords or chord progressions which can be used as midi data to active play various virtual instruments.
The instrument hardware was built using Arduino Mega micro-controller and Adafruit RGB colour Sensor which was connected via jumper cables and soldered pin connections. The combination of both hardware modules creates a colour sensor which can send red, green and blue colour values to a computer. The colour values are then mapped to specific chord progressions using "processing" and "Pure Data" coding environments. As a result, whenever the sensor detects colour the instrument plays a specific chord attached to the scanned colour. |
